2010 Music, Drama, Movement & Art Camp (MDMA)

This camp has full- and half-day options. It is an arts extravaganza for students aged 4 to 10. No previous experience is necessary but is welcome. Enrollment and class size is limited. Students are grouped with other students of similar age and experience.

Classes are custom designed by five of Calgary’s top art educators, to provide an introduction to music, drama, movement and art and high quality instruction is given by professional teachers. The daily program will include thirty-five minutes each of keyboard, rhythm and singing instruction, acting and focus games, movement and different dance forms, varied art techniques and there is a snack break. Snacks and class materials are supplied by CASSA. Friday is open house family day.

NOTE: Enrollment for a full day is available. Students aged 7 to 10 may enroll in a half day of MDMA and a half day of PlayWriting Camp. Students aged 7 to 12 may attend both morning and afternoon sessions of PlayWriting Camp and will work on and perform in two separate and individual plays. Noon hour supervision will be provided, but students must bring their own lunch. Students wishing to take MDMA classes for the full day will be placed in the next level for the afternoon. For example, "red" students, in the morning, will become "blue" students in the afternoon.

Theme

The theme for Music, Drama, Music & Art Camp and PlayWriting Camp in 2010 is Outer Space and Science Fiction.

Teacher Profiles


Alicia Romero, Music

MsRomero
Ms. Romero was born in Mexico City, and obtained her bachelor’s degree of music in piano performance from the National University of Mexico. She refined her skills as a performer studying with Dr. Lillian Upright in Edmonton and has received early childhood music education training from Kindermusik Canada, Muiskgarten, and Music for Young Children.She has attended periodically music education workshops in Calgary.

Ms. Romero ample teaching experience includes 14 years teaching piano to young children, teenagers and adults, and 8 years teaching music classes to babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Ms. Romero sincerely believes in the value of early childhood music education. That is reflected in her Kodaly based music program for young children developed and designed to provide a solid foundation for future instrumental instruction. In 1997 she became a member of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ARMTA), and in 2003 received a grant from the ARMTA Professional Development Fund to undertake the assessment of the piano curricula for young children developed by Musikgarten. She has also been deeply involved with the musical community as the Editor of the Impromptu Newsletter, Editor and Publisher of the Peak Performance 2005 programme, and as speaker and clinician for CASS fundraising events and ARMTA Calgary Workshops.

Currently, Mrs. Romero is committed to share the joy of music-making with children, teens and adults through her independent music studio (avant-gardemusicstudio.com)

Katrina Thompson, Music

Ms. Thompson is a piano instructor with the Chinook Studio of Music and also teaches from her studio in Calgary, Alberta. She has completed a bachelor of music (Honours) from Memorial University (Newfoundland) with a major in theory and composition and a master of music education from the University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK) with a major in piano pedagogy.

Ms. Thompson enjoys working with students of all ages and levels. She has taught piano lessons, music theory, keyboard harmony, master classes, Music for Young Children, undergraduate level music appreciation courses, and music for early childhood specialists. In addition to teaching, she has worked as an accompanist, an adjudicator, an arts administrator, a music research assistant, and as an interpreter at the Cantos Music Foundation. She is a member of the Alberta Piano Teachers Association (APTA), an executive member with the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ARMTA Calgary), and an administrator with the Calgary Arts Summer School Association (CASSA). Her favourite hobbies include cooking, hiking and rock climbing.

Dayna Duman, Drama


 Dayna
During the first nine years of her teaching career, Ms. Duman taught students from pre-Kindergarten age through adult students in Calgary and in Turkey. As a fine art graduate with a major in drama education she enjoys incorporating drama into all classrooms. She has worked as an instructor in CASSA's Musical Showtime camp for several years and is looking forward to her new relationship with CASSA participants and families in the MDMA Camp this year. Jackie Luff, Movement

Jackie Luff is a well-rounded dancer who has completed a degree in Kinesiology as well as her Education degree at the University of Calgary. She is currently a teacher with the Calgary Board of Education and is a dance teacher at James Fowler High School. Jackie has had extensive experience working with children of all ages through a variety of camps and is excited to be invited to work with CASSA.

Her work as a passionate and talented dance teacher has kept her busy for over 10 years. Jackie specializes in Latin dancing and also enjoys teaching a variety of styles including Jazz, Modern, Creative Movement, Contemporary, Hip Hop and West African. Jackie is eager to share her gifts with the children CASSA.

Erin Field, Art

Erin Field has been teaching with the Calgary Board of Education for over four years and is currently a high school Art/English teacher at Ernest Manning High School. Over the past four years, she has integrated the arts in all courses she has taught.

Ms. Field holds a bachelor of education and bachelor of arts with a major in art from the University of Lethbridge. She is currently developing a new and exciting art course focusing on problem solving in the creation of ideas as well as focusing on art design. She is also interested in Interior Decorating/Design and has started a small business in this field with her sister Allison Wandler. Ms. Field extra curricular contributions include the yearly yearbook at Ernest Manning as well as graduation fashion shows within the school. She enjoys working with students of all ages and truly loves helping students view the world though the eyes of an artist.

Jennifer Heon, Movement

Jennifer’s dance training began at the age of eight in jazz and ballet. She graduated from Innisfail High School and moved to Calgary where she completed a bachelor of arts and continued into the Master in Education Program. Throughout her university experience Jennifer maintained strong ties to the dance community. Since then she has explored the worlds of african, tap, jazz, house, musical theatre, specializing in hip hop and funk styles studying with artists Boogaloo Sam, Suga Pop, Mr. Wiggles and Popin’ Pete of the Electric Boogaloos, Greg Campbellock Jr. of the Lockers, Caleaf Sellers of the Original Mop Top, and Ken Swift of the Rock Steady Crew. Jennifer has danced with Wilson Dance Projects and can now be found guest performing and teaching in and around Calgary. Recently, Jennifer was commissioned by the Calgary Board of Education to create an instructional video and manual to assist CBE dance teachers in implementing hip hop and funk styles in their classrooms. Jennifer has been teaching at Central Memorial for six years.

MsLeblanc

Cassie LeBlanc, Art

Miss LeBlanc holds a diploma in visual arts from Medicine Hat College. She currently is working on her bachelor of education and bachelor of arts with a major in art through the University of Lethbridge. She has a strong passion for the arts especially sculpture. Miss LeBlanc enjoys helping children and youth with developing their artistic abilities and opening their eyes to the world of art all around them. She takes pleasure in extracurricular activities most recent being working with her Junior High practicum students on set design for their spring theatrical production. Miss LeBlanc encourages students to rise to the occasion and believes in being a positive influence to many.
