This
half-day camp (either morning or afternoon*) is for all students aged
4-10 years. It's a half-day introductory arts extravaganza which runs
for one week. No previous experience is necessary but is welcome. Enrollment
and class size is limited. Students are grouped
with other students of similar age and experience.
Classes
are custom designed by five of Calgary’s top art educators,
to provide an introduction to music, drama, movement and art and high
quality instruction is given by professional teachers.
The daily program will include forty minutes
each of keyboard,
rhythm and singing instruction, acting and focus
games, movement and different dance forms, varied
art techniques
and there is a ten minute snack break. (Snacks and materials
are supplied by CASSA.)This year’s camp theme is “Olympics.” Friday
is open house family day.
NOTE:
Enrollment for a full day is available. Students aged 9 and 10 can
enroll in a half day of MDMA and a
half day of PlayWriting Camp. Students aged 9 to 12 can attend both
morning and afternoon sessions of PlayWriting Camp and participate
in working on and performing in two separate and individual plays.
Noon hour supervision will be provided but students must bring their
own lunch.
*
When you register we will attempt to accommodate your preference of
morning or afternoon but we cannot guarantee availablity of spaces
in either morning
or afternoon camp.
2008
Teacher Profiles
Music:
Nancie Redekop,
Music, holds ARCT and AMUS Diplomas and is a member of the
Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association. She studied
piano with Mary Naka Murakami and Maude McGuire and pipe
organ with Roger Swinton in Moose Jaw and Dorothy Hare in
Calgary. In Saskatchewan she competed in Kiwanis festivals
from age 5-19 and was busy as an accompanist. For 3 years
she was a travelling piano teacher to Avonlea, Briercrest
and Mortlach. During the 1970's Nancie and Hal Redekop toured
Western Canada and the Northern States with their night club
band and backed up acts like the Allan Sisters.
After
settling in Calgary, Nancie taught the Yamaha group program for
4 years and gave private piano and organ lessons. At First Assembly
Nancie played for several "Singing Christmas Tree" productions
and the Pentacost Presents TV show. Hal and Nancie have played
at Soul Tatoo coffee house and have been guest soloists at many
Calgary and area churches.
Nancie
currently teaches the "Music For Young Children" program
for 3-8 year olds as well as keeping up her private home studio.
Other interests include two-piano work with Janice Dahlberg,
accompanying singer Sharon Braun, collecting musical gift items
and doing all types of crafts
Music
Assistant: Michelle Taylor is
a Certified Teacher of the Music for Young Children program
who has been teaching this program for 8 years in Calgary.
Her background includes grade IX Royal Conservatory piano.
She loves working with kids and has experience teaching children
of all ages. As well as music she has taught swimming lessons
and figure skating. In her spare time she sings lead soprano
with and is the accompanist for a female quartet, Quarter
Notes. She is the mother of two great kids ages 8 and 10
who have
gotten their musical start with her in the Music For Young
Children program. She assisted with the MDMA camp last summer
and is excited to be back for another year of fun!
Drama:
Darren Dyck has
been teaching with the Calgary Board of Education for seventeen
years and is currently an assistant principal at James Fowler
High School. His academic background includes a Bachelor of
Education Degree
with a Drama Major and a Masters of Arts
Degree in Drama Education. He has been involved in drama and
theatre for the past 22 years and believes that students growth
and development is achieved best when children are actively
engaged in drama experiences. His credits as a director of
theatre for young people include over 30 different shows and
most recently include Bugsy Malone, Scarlett Letter and West
Side Story.
Movement:
Meghan Drennan has
taught dance and ESL workshops and residencies
for the public and separate public school boards
in Calgary and Montreal for the past four years.
She is presently working on performances and
dance residencies with Three Left Feet, an
Alberta based Children's Dance company. She
is classically
trained in ballet, and has also trained with
Nyata-Nyata, and under various West African,
yoga, and flamenco specialists. Her degree
in Cultural Anthropology and her commitment
to dance stems from an interest in developing
self awareness, understanding, and being inspired
through challenging experiences of difference.
Art:
Ken Morgan received
his diploma from the Alberta College of Art in fine art painting
and sculpture in 1974 and his Bachelor of Education at the
University of Calgary in 1977. During the past twenty-eight
years he has been employed by the Calgary Board of Education
mainly at the junior high level. He worked with children
from grades 1 through 6 for two years at the Victoria Community
School. He enjoys the enthusiasm and spontaneity of the young
and looks forward to working with this age group again. Mr.
Morgan presented two workshops at the Arts 200 Conference
and was on the ongoing committee for the Arts 2000 and 2001
conferences. Mr. Morgan is currently the fine arts curriculum
leader at Tom Baines School where he teaches visual arts
to students grades 7 through 9. He has taught in the CASSA
summer camps for the past nine years.
